Comparison: 2018 Land Rover Range Rover Velar vs. 2018 Porsche Macan

600 × 335

Winters in Albany are no joke, so you’ll want a luxury SUV that can get you through the snow and ice – and later, rain and mud – in style and comfort.

When comparing the 2018 Land Rover Range Rover Velar to the 2018 Porsche Macan, it’s clear that one was built for the roads and the other for showrooms. Below, see how these two luxury SUVs compare in terms of performance, utility, and interior space:

Performance and Utility

Range Rover Velar

The 2018 Velar has two regular gas options and one diesel. The P250 model features a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine that makes 247 horsepower and 269 lb-ft of torque, while the P380 has a 3.0-liter supercharged V6 engine that produces 380 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque. The Velar D180 has a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine that makes 180 horsepower and 317 lb-ft of torque. All engines have an 8-speed automatic transmission that shifts gears imperceptibly and intelligently.

The Velar also features All-Wheel Drive with Intelligent Driveline Dynamics, giving you hairpin performance on the road and full control and traction when off-road. Electronic Air Suspension allows you to add ground clearance when needed, and All-Terrain Progress Control lets you maintain a steady speed in snow, mud, grass, or dirt.

Porsche Macan

The Macan has a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4 engine that makes 252 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque, and the S trim has a 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged V6 engine that produces 340 horsepower and 339 lb-ft of torque. Both options have a 7-speed PDK automatic transmission – so if you need to get it serviced down the line, you’ll need to see a Porsche specialist. The Macan GT and Turbo models feature high-performance engines, but add $20K and $30K, respectively to the price tag.

The Porsche SUV air suspension with Porsche Active Suspension Management, and features a sport button, sport tailpipes, and sport exhaust system. All models have standard all-wheel drive.

Passenger and Cargo Space

Range Rover Velar

The Velar’s cabin is spacious and comfortable for five passengers, with standard synthetic and suede seating, 10-way power adjustable front seats, leather interior accents, and 40/20/30 split-folding second row. You also have the option for grained leather seating, 20-way power front seats with massage, and heated and ventilated front seats.

Behind the second row, the Velar features 34.4 cubic feet of cargo space, and when you fold the second row that expands to 70.1 cubes.

Porsche Macan

While technically a five-seat SUV, the Macan’s rear seat will feel cramped with three adult passengers. It comes standard with leather seating and features power-adjustable front seats. Available features include heated front and rear outboard seats, ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, and sport seats.

The 2018 Macan has just 17.7 cubic feet of cargo space – half the volume of the Velar – with seats up, and 53 cubes with the second row folded.
